What to pack for a trip to China

The passport with a valid visa page and all other necessary travel documents; identifications that can be used for the purposes of visa verification.

Casual outdoor clothing suitable for the weather condition during your travel period; A pair of relaxing walk shoes is recommended. Many tours involve significant walking, sometimes even on rough surfaces. Many attractions are susceptible to extreme weathers such as excessive sunshine, heavy wind and rain. Even in the Forbidden City, where ancient buildings are dominating attractions, you still have to walk through a number of large open spaces. Most Temples in China have huge courtyards between halls and pagodas.

Carry On luggage for air travel in China is limited to 2 pieces for first class and one piece for business and economy classes. The dimensions of each may not exceed 20X40 X55cm and the total weight of the above two pieces must be under 5kg. The overweight portion has to be checked in.

Wallet with credit cards, travelers checks an so on.

Airline, Cruise or Train tickets if available

First aid kit with common medicines and some useful health supplements for traveler such as vitamins.

Insect repellent, especially during summer months and if you are planning to visit rural areas.

Depending on the season you are traveling, you may want to prepare some protective items such as hat, Sunscreen lotions, lip creams and sunglasses. If you are going to the places with high elevation such as Tibet, parts of Sichuan, Yunnan and Xinjiang provinces, these items are vital to protect your skin and eyes as the high altitude tends to allow the solar radiation to strike the earth very intensely.

Address and telephone book. A list of commonly used e-mails, mailing addresses and telephone numbers could be very helpful in case you need them. It would be wise to only carry a short list with you instead a heavy book like what you typically use at home.

Itinerary with confirmation numbers, addresses and phone numbers of the places where you are going to stay.

Try not to pack or bring valuables such as expensive jewelries and watches.

A brief medical records, if any, for use in the emergent situations.
It is not necessary to bring any bathroom items such as toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo etc. All hotels in China provide such items free of charge.

If you are planning to involve in rather adventurous activities in China like mountain climbing and remote camping, it would be a good idea to take your own light weight sleeping bag and travel towels along with a reasonable supply of tissues, flashlights and other personal toiletries.
