Pain can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as illness or injury. Pain can also be the result of the nervous system signaling problems. If you are suffering mentally, pain can either manifest itself, or feel worse than it otherwise would. Acute pain is most often the case of an injury or illness. In most cases, we will be aware of what the cause is, or a doctor will be able to determine it. Common examples include being burnt or a slipped disc. Longstanding or chronic pain is present over several months. This kind of pain can be extremely difficult to deal with, mentally exhausting and leave us feeling very down, even when the cause is not that serious. Examples of chronic pain are rheumatism, arthritis, fibromyalgia and nerve damage. Nociceptive pain Nociceptive pain is the result of the stimulation of the body’s nocireceptors (pain receptors). This is often caused by tissue damage, such as when we burn ourselves, or hit our thumb with a hammer, for example. How the pain is immediately experienced depends on how much of the tissue has been damaged, how stressed we are and our emotional state. Nociceptive pain also includes an inflammatory component which is what causes the throbbing pain that follows. Neuropathic pain Neuropathic pain is caused by a malfunctioning of the nervous system. It is difficult to treat and can lead to great suffering. Central neuropathic pain is caused by a brain or spine disorder, whilst peripheral neuropathic pain is caused by damage or a disorder in the remaining parts of the sensory nervous system. Common causes of neuropathic pain are amputation (ghost limb pain), diabetes, HIV, MS, spinal injuries, slipped disc and shingles. A neuropathic pain can feel like a burning or cutting and can come in attacks, with the pain shooting down a limb. Sensory disorders in the form of both oversensitivity and tingling sensations are not uncommon with increased sensitivity to pressure, touch and cold. Psychogenic pain All pain includes a psychological component, but psychogenic pain involves a psychological disorder that precedes the pain. This can be caused by depression and anxiety, for example. Depression can appear as just pain when the brain interprets it as physical pain. Sometimes it isn’t possible to determine the cause of the pain. This does not, however, mean that it cannot be treated. Medication and other therapies can provide good results.
