Although premature ejaculation is a common male sexual problem that has been around for generations, medical science still can't tell us with absolute certainty what causes premature ejaculation. It used to be the case that experts believed premature ejaculation was the result of deep rooted psychological problems in the back of a mans mind that had an affect on their love making. This idea had been widely discredited and replaced by the belief that both biological and psychological factors play a part. The problem here is that the medical profession have not reached the point where they can precisely pinpoint the exact causes of premature ejaculation in any single case. The result is that the treatment plans use a shotgun approach ; that is they focus on all the factors - biological and psychological. Also, there is the increasing belief that erection problems play some part in a lot of men's premature ejaculation problems. At last there is good news for sufferers. A host of treatments have been developed to successfully cure the condition and these include pharmaceuticals, psychological counseling and sexual techniques or exercises. The aim of these is to give a man better control over his orgasm and for most, a combination of techniques will give the best results. Here is an explanation of the signs, causes, symptoms and risks that can combine to cause the problem in men. You can use this to assess and judge your own current problems, or determine if you have any future potential risk. Signs and symptoms There is no hard and fast rule as to how long it should take for a man to reach orgasm, therefore we don't really know what is normal. Experts tend to agree that the definition of premature ejaculation is when a man reaches the point of ejaculation before he wants to, in most of his experiences. This may be either during masturbation or any other sexual encounter, though it may only be limited to experiences with other persons. Two types of premature ejaculation have been identified by experts: 1.Primary Premature Ejaculation -- If you have been suffering from premature ejaculation ever since you started having sexual encounters. 2.Secondary Premature Ejaculation -- You have not always suffered but have started having problems only after you enjoyed previously satisfying sexual encounters without such problems. Causes Experts have not ruled out psychological causes as the sole reason but they have not reached the point where they can pinpoint specific causes in individual cases. However, there have been great strides made in treating the biological and psychological factors that cause the problem. There are four basic psychological causes that can cause premature ejaculation. These are: 1. Instances when the man had to rush to reach climax for fear of being caught in the act. 2. Strong feelings of guilt that make a man hurry his sexual experience. 3. Men who have erection problems and are concerned about whether they can stay erect throug the sexual encounter. This may also establish a pattern where a man hurries to ejaculate while he still has an erection. 4. Men who get anxious , particularly about their sexual performance or other matters. In addition, there are also six basic biological causes that can lead to premature ejaculation. These are: 1.Hormone that is not normal 2.Abnormal levels of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) 3.Abnormal reflex activity of the ejaculatory system 4.Some thyroid problems 5.Inflammation and infection of the prostate or urethra 6.Inherited traits or conditions Some doctors think that lifelong Primary Premature Ejaculation is most often a result of biological causes. In addition, some other rare causes of premature ejaculation can include the following: 1.Damaged nervous system resulting from trauma or surgery 2.Withdrawal from certain drugs such as narcotics or trifluoperazine ( a treatment for anxiety and other mental disorders). Risk Factors Finally, there are some factors than tend to increase the risk of premature ejaculation. These include: 1.Impotence -- Having erectile problems may lead to premature ejaculation. By some estimates, one of three men suffering from premature ejaculation also have impotence problems. 2.Health problems -- Some medical conditions may make a man feel anxious about sex, such as a heart disorders, and compel him to rush through sex. 3.Stress -- Feeling stressed about areas of your life can stop you relaxing and result in premature ejaculation. 4.Medications -- There are some drugs that can naturally cause premature ejaculation.
