Three Point Checklist For Hiring The Right Personal Trainer

By: Anita Orthal

You won't find many activities that improve the quality of your life drastically. Fitness is one of them. The confidence you gain is unmatched, the energy your body creates feels electrifying, and who can put a price tag on having a well defined six pack?

There is one particular issue that stops most people from getting in shape Not knowing how to exercise. The solution is a passionate and experienced personal trainer. If you are thinking of improving your life dramatically, hire a reliable personal trainer to help you get in shape and feel great. Here are the three things to keep in mind before you hire a personal trainer:

1. Make sure your trainer is currently certified through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, NCCA

The personal training industry is currently unregulated - That means anybody can label himself a professional without any knowledge of health! He may not even know how to perform an exercise with correct form, but if he can sound smart you can be fooled into thinking he's an expert especially if you don't know anything about health. All he has to do is find an internet article and steal a program then show it as if it were his own. You would be surprised at how common this is, and it gives the industry a bad name.

As a minimum, your trainer should be certified through one of these NCCA approved agencies:

-National Academy of Sports Medicine
-American Council in Exercise
-American College of Sports Medicine
-National Council on Strength & Fitness
-National Strength and Conditioning Association
-National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association
-National Federation of Professional Trainers

If a trainer has one of these certs, usually he has devoted a bit of time to understanding how the body works. It's not a badge of a great trainer, but it can definitely weed out the con artists. If the personal trainer you contact doesn't have one of these certifications, avoid him.

2. Make sure the personal trainer has experience and has a specialty with your goal

Once you find a trainer that is properly certified, ask if he has experience with your goal. You may talk to a personal trainer who specializes in marathons and has hundreds of fans, but if you want to drop 20 pounds he may be a beginner. A specialist will be able to help you see the best results. If you contact a trainer who doesn't have prior experience with your goal, just find someone who does!

3. Make sure the personal trainer has proof of his work

If you come across a personal trainer who is certified through the NCCA and has experience with your goals, the next step is to look for references. Just ask for some proof. If you find he has a list of testimonials that have succeeded with the same goal as yourself, chances are you have found a passionate and experienced personal trainer.

If the personal trainer you call is certified by through the NCCA, has experience with your goal and proof to back himself or herself up, you can be almost sure you have found a quality personal trainer that can help you achieve your goals. Hire him, you will be happy you did.
