This Incredible Love For Chocolate!

By: Jean-Louis Vosgien

As far as I can remember I have always been in love with chocolate. (Do not read this article if you are a great chocolate lover or have some chocolate ready to eat. You will not resist! )I think my mother put chocolate in the milk of my feeding bottle. When I started to eat solid food, chocolate was the right stuff! One of the best memories I have when I was a young child is, when I licked my fingers, of the dark chocolate I had just eaten.

My mother was a very good cook and she was often preparing desserts using chocolate; chocolate cakes, chocolate mousse, chocolate fondue, chocolate cream, chocolate pudding, chocolate truffles to name a few. Even chocolate drinks like the ones we had for breakfast, my sister and I. When my mother was baking we were never very far away, waiting for the right moment to lick what was left in the branches of the whisk, wooden spoon or mixing bowl! Great moments and great memories are present today when I think of this time!

Chocolate seems to be one of the very few ingredients that are so attractive, not only for children but for adults as well. Many people I know must have at least one piece of chocolate once a day, if not more. Others claim that :”It is impossible to finish a meal without chocolate”! A dessert made of chocolate or even any piece of chocolate, dark or light, however small would satisfy their need.

Chocolate is fascinating and European countries like Switzerland, Belgium and France are masters and rivals in the art of chocolate.

Is there really a little “something” in the chocolate composition that is “pushing” or “addicting” us to it? Is it something else, a more mystical component, known only by the Inca or the pre-Colombian people, something that was capable of elevating people to the level of the gods, something making of men gods? WellI am here maybe a little bit too exalted, but is it not true that chocolate has the power to calm, to bring a sort of wellness, of serenity when eaten?
It seems today that it is not always necessary to eat chocolate to have the benefits from it. Have you ever heard of chocolate massage? Very chic today, more and more people use this as a means to reach the realm of the gods.
