There’s No Place like Home: the Importance of Home Insurance

The present economic crisis has led to drop in house prices as the whole market takes a roller-coaster ride. If you are a first time buyers of property, you might have problems like paying the mortgage, making renovations where needed, and taking note of all the industry developments. One also need to insure the house against unforeseen accidents.

Home insurance just seems like another bill in the post; and in a sense, it is. After all, we become so accustomed to receiving so many stamped envelopes at the end of the month demanding instalments for this, payments for that, standing orders here, cheque guarantees there. And whilst we can allow these issues to simply become routine once we have organised them all around our life and finances, it really counts to pay attention when you are still scouting around for the right kind of policy.

Your average home insurance usually covers two areas: building cover and contents cover. The two are fairly self-explanatory: building cover encompasses all elements of the physical house itself, from drain damage to roof collapse; contents cover stretches to mean all the things you can bring in and out of the house, such as laptops, furniture, clothes, televisions, microwaves. In a sense it is easy to think of the former as covering unforeseen damage caused by weather or sheer bad luck, and the latter as protecting against random acts of criminal violence or theft.

After figuring out whether you need both or just one of these insurance packages, it serves your best interests to do some browsing of various providers before making your final deal. Most companies now run online, indeed many prefer it, and most websites for insurance policies will offer you an opportunity to generate a quick estimated quote for your cover.

Further to this, many companies can offer discounts if you get both covers together. Alliance and Leicester, for example, can provide a 50% on your contents cover if you are simultaneously purchasing building cover as well. With deals like this, the little envelope with the home insurance stamp needn’t be the one worthy of a headache every month.
