The Required Five Home Finance Start of the Year '09 Changes

By: Bill Spohnholtz

Well it's that time of year again and after the mad Christmas spending spree you've probably emptied your wallet.
Don't fuss over it after all it's a new year. What better time then right now is there to make a change in your Financial situation?
Now before you resolve things to yourself that you can't possibley keep like I'm going to save 50% of my income; here's 5 resolutions you can proabably actually keep that will make a real difference in your future:

  1. Earn A Wage Increase- Even a reasonable 1% Wage Boost over cost of living can improve your quality of life. Just make sure you don't just increase your spending habits.

  2. Start an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)-Most of us haven't yet created an IRA and we're missing out on great tax savings potential. While the ROTH IRA is another choice if you'd like your tax savings later in life, I just don't trust the Feds that much and I'd rather have my tax savings now.

  3. Start Your Emergency Account-Unfortunately most of us do not have an adequate emergency fund. In fact most of us can't afford a simple car repair without diving into the credit cards. Building a 6 month savings will protect your hard work from getting wiped out when the unexpected happens. Also, you'll feel less afraid about taking some risk when an oppurtunity arises.

  4. Try to Invest For Yourself-Open up a trading account with a discount stock broker and give it a try. For me the fun and excitement made me want to save more and the time I spent learning about companies and investing improved my returns and took up time that I'd normally be wasting money during.

  5. Subscribe to a Finance Blog- There are lots of great blogs out there with wonderful training and information, but what's just as important that you don't get from books or news is the community. Many blog owners and followers are amazing people who love to help.

Overall remember it's critical to make goals you can succeed at because sucess creates more success.
