The Porsche 914 Or Was It The VW 914?

By: Dan Hacket

With the release of The Porsche 914 in 1969 it was a mid engined car which gave it a really sporty feel it had two seats and the roof was called a targa top because you could remove it well it's not a complete convertible but still same the roof comes off a bit! The engine was a straight 4 cylinder engine. The idea of the 914 was thought up as Porsche and Volkswagen decided to join forces to build a new car. Volkswagen would take 914 body and go on to build the 14/4s and the 914/6s is what Porsche produced with their share of the shells. How ever in North America everybody considered the 914 a Porsche which was kind of good for Porsche but not so Much Volkswagen.

The 914 was not built like their previous cars the used pop-up headlights and the rear window was vertical. There weren't any back seats and the front seats were so low to floor of the car which in turn was so low to the ground I that you had a low centre of gravity which is no bad thing.

The inside of the 914 was very simple and by today's modern standards it could also be classed as a track car it had everything it needed but only the necessities. There is only space for the drivers seat and the passenger seat and very little else. The gearbox was very similar to the 928's with first gear is at the bottom left which could get confusing if you were used to first gear being left and up.

The targa top of the 914 was identical to the 911 where you could store it in the boot of the car but if you took the top off the and wind the windows down the 914 is a very sexy looking car in fact it's a sexy roadster!
