Solving quotaon issues in Linux based registro servers

By: Robert Thomson

As cPanel+Linux became market leader in the hosting market, I've seen some common issues.

Any aged Linux webhosting system administrator should have ever heard about Quotaon, a linux common hospedagem tool that helps the kernel to control disk limits.

As the server is new and empty, you won't have major issues with quotas. But as soon as it gets full, let's say 350 hosting accounts, some problems start to happen, such as this one causing high loads, I/O latency and consequently some downtime for your customers.

A fast way to solve this problem, is to set "Safe quotas" hospedagem Off, under "Tweak settings". But why would this tiny applicatin would cause big trouble? Quotaon will run over all your harddisk and rebuild all the quotas, everytime an user or reseller changes his quota. Imagine you have a 400GB harddisk, 60% of space used. Running over the entire disk (smaller or bigger), will cause some hurt to your server.

Commonly, the most crowded directory is /var . It holds configuration files, temp files, spool, mysql, and some others. Specialists recommend you to mount /var in another partition, with NOQUOTAS directive under fstab. It will disable quotas in /var, and then prevent your server from running over /var to rebuild user quotas.
