Little Known Facts About Depression And Illness -- Find Valuable Reviews Now

By: Nathan Knightley

There are many different forms of depression. Without realizing it or accepting it, many Americans suffer from some sort of depression. It is estimated that some 14 million Americans are affected by depression. Unfortunately only a very small percent, less than 1/3, will go for treatment. What are the reasons? Perhaps it is because depression is classified as a mental illness. No one wants to be classified with that label. There was a time in our history when those who suffered mental illness were shunned by society. It was common to lock away people in facilities for the mentally ill when they exhibited signs of depression. Fortunately times have changed. However, old stereotypes have not. Many Americans keep their problem to themselves, motivated by this.

Depression is caused by many factors. Diagnosis isn't simple. Many things have to be considered such as genetics, biology and even outside influences. Depression can stem from drug or alcohol abuse, or even from simple everyday stress. Depression can come from all of these elements. In what ways can those who suffer from depression be treated? Fortunately the treatments and cures are as numerous as depression causes. These options are generally considered after evaluating the individual afflicted with depression

Many claim they have a cure for depression. Methods of treatment that are safe and that work to cure depression do exist. When considering which option is best there are a few considerations that must be examined. Is there evidence to show that the option works to treat depression? Is a prescription drug or herbal treatment being applied in the proper quantity to show results? Has the method been accepted in accordance with high quality control standards? It's time to take a look at some of the more accepted cures.

For years the typical treatment for many forms of depression has been prescription drugs and psychotherapy. To treat depression a typical type of drug recommended is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRI. First used in the U.S. In 1988, Prozac has become one of the most common. Many others such as Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox have followed it. All have been proven to be effective. However, prescription drugs are expensive and offer many side effects. That's the reason natural treatments are gaining popularity. St Johns Wort extract is one herbal cure gaining popularity quickly. It must have between three and five percent hyperforin to work. It's success rate is similar to that of Prozac but with fewer side effects. If those who have the disease don't seek treatment, a cure does no good. If you think you have depression, or if someone you know shows the signs, visit a doctor.
