Keyword Dilution and Excessive Cross-Linking

I haven't heard Keyword Dilution and Excessive Cross-Linking before. But, as I have searched and read some of the articles about it. I have learned that Keyword Dilution and Excessive Cross-Linking can really hurt your sites ranking.

I will start with Keyword Dilution. What is Keyword Dilution and How does it hurt your sites ranking?

Keyword Dilution means having too many keywords written on a web page regardless if those keywords are on your home page or in any part of your web site. But, if you stuff lots of keywords on your homepage that hurts more.

If you really want your site to rank on search engine without having a major drop you have to avoid keyword dilution. You should put only one keyword on a page. In short, you should have the same number of keywords and pages. For example, if you use the Wordtracker and you selected 10 keywords or keyphrases, that means you should create 10 individual pages for your site.

So for your homepage, if your main topic is all about "bags", then focus on that single keyword which is "bags". Don't ever try to dilute your homepage with lots of keyword terms like "We sell original blue bags, red bags, black bags and white bags". Those keywords should be put on the other individual pages and not for your homepage.

As a Search Engine Optimizer, you should keep in mind that a single keyword are much more competitive to optimize.

Next is, Excessive Cross-Linking. Cross Linking refers to those links between a family of domain or those website that owned by one person. Cross linking is not bad and that is an acceptable approach for different Search Engine. But, Excessive cross-linking is not acceptable.

Excessive Cross-Linking means linking to sites that are owned by a person in multiple ways. By doing that kind of act, your site will be penalized. Yahoo and Google penalized those sites that has excessive cross-linking.

Cross linking strategy can help users by pointing them to other sites that can give them another information on the topic that they choose. On the other hand, there are some site owners who wanted to cross link just for page rank reason.

There are some guidelines that a site owner should consider in cross-linking. The first thing a site owner should consider is the content. Always remember that Content is King. If you really want to link to the other site that is relates to your site make sure that the site has a unique content. You should also consider that you cross-links for your readers and not for page rank reason just like what I said earlier. The next thing is, putting your links on the most appropriate place and adding the right anchor text.

Those are some of the guidelines that a site owner should consider om cross-linking for your site not to be penalized.

Now, that we all know what's keyword dilution and excessive cross-linking is, maybe we should start checking our sites. We all have reasons why we created different sites just make sure that you did it because you want to share your opinions or your knowledge to other people who is searching the web.
