Enlargement of the Ovary and Other Risks of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

By: Julie Teep

As with any procedure, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has risks. Although the procedure has proven time and time again to be safe, it is possible to achieve multiple pregnancies, develop an ectopic pregnancy, get an infection, or it is possible to develop a condition known as ovarian hyperstimulation.

To increase your chances of implantation it is normal practice to transfer several embryos into the uterus at one time. For most women this works out well. However, some women end up with several of these embryos implanted, resulting in multiple pregnancies. If you are a healthy woman this should not be problem, you will receive special prenatal care to ensure you and the babies are growing and thriving normally.

When an embryo is transferred, it does not transplant to the uterus wall immediately. The embryo will float around and find a comfortable place to spend the next nine months. In some cases an embryo will float up in to the fallopian tube and implant, causing an ectopic pregnancy. This occurs in about 1% to 2 % of IVF procedures. However, IVF pregnancies are so closely monitored that this is actually not a risk to your health, because it will be caught very early.

Anytime you have a foreign object inserted into the body you run the risk of an infection. IVF results in an infection 0.1% of the time, or about 1 in every 1,000 procedures. If an infection does occur it can usually be treated with oral antibiotics, but there have been reported cases of severe infection due to an in vitro procedure.

Last but not least, it is possible to over stimulate an ovary. Some women are very sensitive to the fertility drugs given prior to the egg retrieval procedure. This sensitivity can cause their ovary to become enlarged four to five times its normal size. This can cause extreme discomfort, and may cause leakage in to the abdominal cavity. However, this happens in less than 1% of women whom receive IVF, and patients are monitored so closely during this procedure that it is not likely any of these risks will become severe.
