Does Life Begin at 40?

By: Jerry Aragon

In the year 2006young is IN! Everybody's into looking young these days! There are four categories of age in America. They are: 1) the young; 2) middle-aged; 3) the old; and 4) my, but you're sure looking good these days!

A few years ago, there was a woman newscaster, who reported the news for many years on one of the major networks. She was around 45-50 years old, but I never heard her exact age. She openly reported that she had already had three face-lifts, and she was going to have another one, at about $5,000 a pop!

She allowed the cameras to roll during the preparation, the actual surgery, and the aftermath and healing process of the face-lift itselfbandages and all. After a few months of healing, this woman looked goodno wrinkles; no lines in her face, etc. But, you know what? Despite all the money she spent for face-lifts, she still looked 45-50 years old! She looked BETTER but not YOUNGER! Shortly thereafter, this woman disappeared from television, and I have not seen her anywhere in over five years!

So, is a face-lift going to help a person look younger? In my opinionof course not! Like the newscaster, the person may look BETTER but, that person will not look YOUNGER! If you're 40 years oldyou're 40! If you're 50 years oldyou're 50! (Sorry to rain on your parade!) I think the only way a person can look younger is to STAY FITdo regular exercise, good diet, and take care of themselves. The important issue here, is NOT to look OLDER than you are! And, I've seen people my age, who look 5-10 years OLDER than they are! That's probably because of all that smoking, drinking, and drugging people do, but that's only my opinion!

I didn't write this piece, to take a trip down Ego Street or to "toot my horn"! I don't need that! But, I can only share with you my own experiences on the subject of age, and if there's anything I'm an "expert" atis staying fit! In 2006, I am 60 years young, and I can tell you with great pleasure, that nobody ever guesses my agethey don't even come close! Most people guess my age to be in my late 40's or early 50's! The last person who guessed my age put my at 51.

I'm delighted about this, but looking young, doesn't come from a face-life or a pill out of a bottle. It comes from staying fit. I've jogged 10-15 miles a week and "pumped aluminum," since 1986! I watch my diet, get a flu shot and a physical every year. I do this, not to look youngerbut to stay healthy! If looking young comes with the packagethen it's frosting on the cake!

A few years ago, I worked with a woman who told me, "Jerry, you don't 'act old.'" I had no idea what she meant by that! So she explained. She said, that she's observed people in the 40's and 50's walk around all slumped over like they're 65 or 70 years old; whining and complaining about their ailments; they can barely move from place to place; dragging their behind around in slow-motion and so forth!

I never gave it any thought. So, I decided to observe a few 40 and 50 year olds. She was right! I saw these OLD-LOOKING 40 and 50 year olds lumbering, and dragging their behinds, around the company and around townjust making it! Do you really think a face-lift or a tummy-tuck is going to make these people look younger? And, tucking in everything where the sun don't shine is going to help? The most exercise some people get is to clickand double-click all year!

I don't think age is as important as to how the individual feels, etc. I'm 60, but I feel 35, and on the dance floor I say, "I want all you OLDVERY OLD3040 and 50 year olds to get off the dance floor! Take your crutches, wheelchairs, and self-pity with you! And, let a 60 year old show you how to "shake your booty!" I was around when rock and roll first began, and I'll show these OLD people how to do it!

So, does life really begin at 4050or 60? Maybemaybe not! Take it from meI've been there, and I can tell you you're getting old when:

* A fortune teller offers to read your facerather than the lines in your hand!

* You sink your teeth into a steakand it stays there!

* Dialing long distancewears you out!

* Your back goes outmore than you do!

* Your little black book contains only names ending with M.D.

* Everything hurts and what doesn't hurtdoesn't work!

* Your knees bucklebut your belt won't!

* You feel like the morning afterbut you haven't been anywhere!

* The best part of your day, is when the alarm clock goes off in the morning.

* You look forward to another dull eveningso, what else is new?

When it comes to age, there's no turning back the clock! Creams; powders; magic dust; hair color; plastic; tucking in everything; face-liftdo all this and you'll look more like a store mannequin than a real person, in my view! And, there's nothing worse than looking at a "plastic woman," or a "plastic man!" Sure, sureat one time, I used to thing of myself as the 6 million dollar manand now I think of myself as only the $60.00 man!

For meas far as age is concernedBE MYSELFand grow old gracefully! As to what I think about young people, and all those people under 60 years of age? I HATE ALL OF YOU!
