Create a Safe Enviroment on the Stairs

By: Sammy Turner

Falling anywhere can put a damper on your day, but they can also be very dangerous. This is especially true of seniors, who are at a much higher risk of falling and injuring themselves. Of all areas in the home, the stairs usually present the biggest risk, with the majority of fall related deaths happening on the stairs.
To help increase the safety of the stairs, some are tempted to just avoid those areas of their home that has stairs, but this is not really a practical solution. Others will hire someone to help them out or have a family member help them, but these also have their drawbacks. A stair lift is one type of mobility lifting aid that can usually be easily installed into the home to increase safety, while preserving independence and the pocketbook.
Stair lifts are a type of lifting aid that are generally installed directly onto the staircase. The stair lift occupant will sit in a chair or perhaps stand on a platform, which will then carry them lengthways up the stairs. The sitting stair lift, called a stair chair, is much more common and a lot safer than the standing stair lift, which is also sometimes called a perch lift. In cases where the staircase is very narrow, it might be necessary to attach the stair lift to the wall as opposed to securing it to the steps.
There are two basic types of stair lifts available. The battery powered stair lift is the most commonly used stair lift. It offers the advantage of still working when the power goes out, but they do cost a little more. The AC powered stair lift costs less, but if the home looses power, the AC Powered Stair Lift will also loose power.
For staircases that are straight, a stair lift provides an easy to install and cost effective solution as compared to an elevator. There are kits available that the homeowner can safely and comfortably install on their own, without the need to hire a professional installer. These kits install in a few hours, using only normal household tools. The alternative can be pretty expensive and is rarely actually needed on straight stairs.
If you don't have a straight staircase, then finding a lift is often a lot more difficult. Curved stair lifts can quickly cost over 10 times more than a straight stair lift. They also take a lot longer to build and install. Frequently, the turn around on a curved stair lift is well over two months. In these cases, it is a good idea to get a couple of estimates and also consider getting an elevator. The curved stair lift won't have any real resale value, but the elevator will, which makes it an attractive choice.
