Choosing between an Apple iPod and a Microsoft Zune

By: Petar Ivanov

It is not rare to find someone undecided on whether he or she will buy an iPod or a Zune.So how do we decide? This guide will try to point out the difference between these two players and the advantages of each.

Acceptable file format
IPod and the Zune will both accept some common files such as MP3, MP4, M4A, M4B, and MOV. However where things get complicated is to the proprietary files. The Zune being a Microsoft product has a preference for WMA (Windows Media Audio format) while Ipod uses its AAC file format. These proprietary formats cause problem if ever you want to exchange files between the two players.
The only way you could do this is by converting the AAC or WMA files to MP3 but this is not possible out of the box. You need to use a converter to be able to accomplish this task.

Online Store
Both Microsoft and Apple has their own online stores that will allow the users to buy new media for their players.Zune store is Microsoft's answer to Apple's Itunes store and features songs at the same price as its Apple's counterpart. However Itunes store seems to be more complete in terms of service and contents. On this point Ipods seems to have the edge over the Zune.

Technical aspects of the players

The iPod measures 4.1?2.4????inches and weight around 4.8 oz compared to the Zune which measures 4.4 x 2.4 x .60-inches and weighs 5.6 oz. The iPod has an LCD screen of 2.5 inch displaying 320x 240 pixels while the screen of the Zune measures 3 inch and displays 320x 240 pixels.
When it comes to difference the Microsoft Zune has an integrated Fm player and has built in Wi-Fi features. However this does not allow the Zune's user to connect remotely to the Zune store but only allow the user to share songs wirelessly.
Both models use Li-Ion batteries and have a life of 14 hours which will enable a lot of playtime.

Price
In terms of prices there are not a lot of difference between the Microsoft Zune and the Apple's iPod with both 30GB model retailing at the same price. So the price factor will not be a major issue when coming to choose between the Zune and the iPod.

Zune vs. iPod

Both players are close to each other in terms of technical features and price. It will really come to the user to choose which one he will choose. Clearly the iPod carries a much higher status than the Zune since it has been present for a much longer time. Choosing between these two players can really come down to choosing between Apple and Microsoft.
