Auto and other insurances cost more in certain areas

By: Alston J. Balkcom

It may seem unfair but it is true that your insurance rates is affected by your zip code.
The part of the country you live in, your town and even your zip code can have a big impact on help or hurt you when it comes to pricing for different types of insurance coverages. The size of your town, crime rate and probability of major storms can impact the amount of claims an insurance company expects to pay and because of that often makes a tremendous difference in the amount you pay for your insurance policies.
The types of coverage most impacted by your location include:

  • Vehicle insurance

  • Homeowners insurance

  • Apartment Renters insurance

  • Health insurance

Auto Insurance

You will find more car accidents in areas where there are more cars and people per square mile. Additional automobiles, means more autos to crash into and more vehicles that can crash into you. This means that the auto insurance carrier pays more in claims and their clients are charged more in monthly premiums. The crime rate, including the rate of vandalism and car thefts per capita also has an impact. Severe weather, means more car accidents and higher costs as well

Home owners insurance

House coverage is also impacted by severe weather. People who live in areas that are in hurricane zones are tremendously impacted by this fact. Mother Nature costs insurance carriers in other ways. Snow, rain and high temperatures cause more and also higher costs for coverage.
The cost of construction in a city is yet another factor that drives the costs upward or downward. If building materials cost more or the cost of labor is higher in your town verses the one next door, your premiums may be much higher.

Renters insurance

The crime rate can make a huge difference in the prices we pay to cover our apartments. Theft is one of the major things that an apartment renters insurance policy protects us against and therefore if there are more break-ins in your area your apartment insurance carrier may pass those higher prices on to you.

Health Care insurance

Location has less to do with the frequency of sickness and injuries than it has to do with the cost of that treatment. The cost to set a broken bone on your leg in a little hamlet in Wyoming will be much lower than the price to set the same leg in Los Angeles. In areas where physicians and hospitals charge more, insurance carriers cost more and we pay more to the carriers. Insurance carriers may charge residents of the pricier area more for coverage.

What to Do?

No one should change your residence based solely on the cost of your insurance premiums. That being said, if you're shopping for your next house, you should take this into account along with the other issues you would generally consider about when selecting your next home.
Tell your story to an insurance agent who services an area that you are thinking about moving to and ask them to calculate some estimated costs for different insurance coverages. The insurance lines ones that are most affected by location are car, home, apartment and health coverage.
Usually, a more expensive home will have lower insurance rates. This can mean that you and your family can afford a home that you may not have believed you could.
