A Guide to the Moscone Convention Centre

By: Catherine Gliddon

The Moscone Convention Centre is the largest exhibition centre at San Francisco, California. An ideal venue for concerts, meetings, conferences and various types of events, the centre situated in the heart of downtown is San Francisco's premier exhibition facility.

The Moscone Centre was a single hall covering an area of around 300,000 square feet when initially built in 1981. However, with the two subsequent expansions in 1992 and 2003, the centre now includes three main halls. While the Moscone South was the initial centre built in 1981, the Moscone North Hall was built in 1992. Both the North and South Halls are underground halls beneath the Yerba Buena Gardens. The third hall built in 2003 is the Moscone West which is a free standing building rising to three levels.

With its extensive expansion, the Moscone Centre now covers over two million square feet of building area. This is inclusive of its 106 meeting rooms, above 700,000 square feet of exhibit space and almost 123,000 square feet of pre-function lobbies. While the centre has six primary exhibit halls, three of them in Moscone South aggregate to a contiguous exhibit space of 260,560 square feet and can even be combined into a single hall for hosting events that require that kind of space. Moscone North has two halls with a contiguous space of 181,400 square feet while Moscone West has a contiguous space of 99,916 square feet at level one and 199,432 square feet of flexible space at the second and third levels.

The Moscone Centre is located in the market area and thus offers visitors with a huge range of choices in terms of accommodation. While there are over 20,000 rooms available close to the centre, San Francisco's hotels have on offer rooms that can meet the budget requirements as well as standards of all visitors.

Transportation is one less worry with San Francisco's public rapid-transit system BART which makes over 300,000 passenger trips on an average weekday. The mass transit system Muni Metro which is run by the San Francisco Municipal Railway also provides for a good conveyance option to visitors and has been declared as the second busiest rail system in United States by the American Public Transportation Association.

The Moscone Convention Centre is a preferred venue by most organisers and has witnessed various annual events. Some popular events that are held here on an annual basis include the Macworld Expo which is dedicated to products from Apple Inc., the American Bar Association's meetings, the Worldwide Developers Conference and public gated events like the WonderCon.
