A Guide to Miami Beach Convention Center

By: Catherine Gliddon

South Florida's largest convention centre, the Miami Beach Convention Center first opened in 1957 and has since witnessed great historical events like the one in 1964 where Muhammad Ali won his first Heavyweight Championship; the Republican National Convention in 1968 and the Democratic National Convention in 1974 which was attended by over 45,000 delegates.

Spanning across four city blocks in central Miami Beach, the convention centre provides almost 500,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space with a 35-foot ceiling clearance and unlimited floor load capacity. With almost 70 meeting rooms in different sizes varying from an area of 500 to 20,000 square feet and no interruptive columns, the centre's high-tech telecommunications and infrastructural upgrades since its $92 million renovation in 1990 has made it an ideal venue not just for major annual trade shows and exhibitions but also for special and popular events like NFL's Commissioner's Party during the Super Bowl and the Miss Universe Pageant.

Aptly placed in the heart of Miami Beach, this centre is easily accessible as it is located at a distance of only few minutes from the Miami International Airport. With prime landmarks like the Art Deco and South Beach Districts being just adjacent to the centre and the close proximity to one of America's most popular beaches, it is impossible to face any problems in locating this huge yet sophisticated convention centre. Also, accommodation is not difficult to find with plenty of options available around the center thanks to its central location.

Offering a parking facility for over 880 vehicles adjacent to the center and another parking facility for 2,000 vehicles one block away; the Miami Beach Convention Center has well handled shuttling and parking requirements. With well located utilities and evenly distributed freight docks around the complex, the centre provides not only uninterrupted and convenient basic facilities but also ensures easy movement of stocks.

Classily done in Miami Beach's signature Art Deco motif, the interiors of the halls are done in pastel shades with lively shocks of bright colours and contemporary unpredictable architecture. The Miami Beach Convention Center truly combines luxury with over-the-edge technology to give both exhibitors as well as visitors value for their money and time.

With such impressive features and a background that adds to its pride, it is not unexpected that the centre has been booked not just for the year 2008 but also with many upcoming events scheduled around 2009. Some very awaited events include HD Boutique on 17th and 18th of September, 11th America's Food and Beverage Show from the 24th to 26th of September; the IBEX 2008 from October 6th to 8th; the South Florida Auto Show from the 7th to 19th of November and the Art Basel Miami Beach event from the 3rd to 7th of December among others for 2008.

Among the various bookings done for 2009 are the Original Miami Beach Antique Show in January, the Swim Wear Show in July and various other assorted cultural, economic as well as social events.
